In the spring of 2018, The Brookhaven Village Association completed its participation with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to monitor toxic air pollutants in the surrounding communities around the Brookhaven Landfill. Four air samples were collected in the Brookhaven community and analyzed by an independent laboratory to identify the presence of 43 toxic air pollutants. The samples were collected downwind of the landfill and outside of periods of high traffic.
Results of the air screening survey identified twenty-six toxic air pollutants that were all were below DEC’s short-term health-based air concentration values. Therefore, these findings would not be considered a potential health threat or an immediate health concern. Air sampling results were also below or within an order of magnitude of the long-term health-based air concentration values and similar to concentrations found in the DEC’s ambient air monitoring network. Based on these study findings and comparisons, DEC staff concluded that there is no immediate need for follow-up sampling.

The Brookhaven Village Association Board regrets that Squassux Landing must remain closed until a tentative opening date of May 7th.
In short, due to the October storm of 2017 and the frigid conditions we experienced after Christmas, the marina was severely damaged. Repairs are underway, but will take time. Conditions there are unsafe for boating, and the facility must not be used. Please do not attempt to occupy any slip, launch any vessel, or try to walk on any dock.
The safety of our community is the Board’s most pressing concern.
Please call Andy Rubin, the BVA dock master, if you have any questions at 631-521-4411 between 9:00AM and 5:00PM.
