Thank you to our community members who came to our BVA meeting this last Wednesday night (7/14/21) with Adrienne Esposito of Citizens Campaign for the Environment. The lively discussions on the Landfill, the Winter Brothers water transfer project and the rezoning motion known as BR 1 was informative with the community’s and Adrienne’s knowledge and participation. The meeting reiterated how critical our engagement is in closing this landfill, preserving our land and determining the future of this area.
BR 1 is the recent motion put forth by the Town of Brookhaven to rezone 130 wooded acres of land surrounding the Landfill, known as the buffer zone, from Residential to Light Industrial. The intention is to sell 70 acres of this area for development and industrial use further increasing the traffic, noise, pollution and potential environmental contaminants of this already congested area. The Town held a public hearing on July 15th, 2021 (watch here – at 1:10:10 discussion begins re BR1) The BVA, on behalf of our community, voiced our strong opposition at the hearing and with a letter to the Town Board. The letter can be read here.
After oppositional arguments were made from a number of nearby residents, organizations and members of our own and surrounding communities, the Town Board has postponed their vote and extended the public comment period for 30 days from July 15th.
If you would like to make a comment on BR 1, you may do so here. Please reference BR1 in your comment.
